The Awa Odori dance has overwhelming popularity as traditional public entertainment not only in Tokushima, but throughout Japan.
The Awa Dance Festival is held from 12 to 15 August as part of the Obon festival in Tokushima Prefecture. Awa Odori is the largest dance festival in Japan, attracting over 1.3 million tourists every year.
The Awa Odori dancers who parade through town can only be seen during the time of the Obon festival, but actually there is an Awa Odori that can be seen anytime all year long! At the Awa Odori Hall, Awa Odori public performances are put on all year. On the dance stage, highly individualistic ren (Awa Odori dance groups) put on performances. When the space has filled with the enthusiasm of the dancers and spectators, next the spectators take to the stage to join in dancing the Awa Odori. Well, come on, everyone. Let's dance!
