A shrine built over water. One of the Three Views of Japan, Miyajima, Itsukushima Shrine.

Miyajima locates on Seto Inland Sea, and is a sacred place of Buddhism. The firt shrine building was built in the 6th century, and current shrine dates from the 13th century, and built on pier-likes structures over the bay. The shrine's structure shows solemn and gorgeous, it reflects its high standard of technic and indeed a piece of art. The great Torii is the symbol of Miyajima, through different nature colours such as mountain and ocean, the beautiful view with the shrine has represents the perfect combination of nature beauty and human creation.
Miyajima is one of the top three scenic spots in Japan, and is a registered World Heritage Site in 1996. Another famous in Miyajima is oyster. Here is a historical and romantic Island where has World Heritage - Itsukushima Shrine, Mount Misen where been discribed as “Virgin Forest Misen”, also many historical heritage attractions.
Based on the main shrine, there are 21 buildings surrounded. There is also a noh stage for noh performances. In certain festival, it even play a story of history “Ranryohoh” which also a popular TV drama story act in Asia the year before last year.
The shrine built in vermilion colour and the length is around 300 meters and it looks like a big bird in vermilion colour from Hiroshima.
Looking out from the shrine, the view is beautiful as a piece of painting work with blue sea and the green of the forest.
Usually the great Torii looks like floating on the sea during high tide, you can walk to the foot during low tide only. The vermilion colour besides the sea, mountain and under the sky, looks beautifully and peacefully, it is easy to looking this lovely view for whole day. There is also a plate on the Great Torii was painted by the Arisugawa no miya Imperial Prince, Taruhito, and was the ninth head of the family. The sun and the moon are painted on the east and the west of the Great Torii roof. Due to the northeasterly direction is considered to be the demon's gate in Feng Shui, therefore the painted sun is said to block this demon's gate.
The best timing seeing great Torii is at twilight. You should take this opportunity for some good shoots while golden great Torii reflects during the twilight. You will also able to ride on night boat cruises after sunset, or pray while high tide.
