Hokkaido – Hokkai Heso Matsuri(Bellybutton Festival)
Hokkaido’s Furano City is home to an interesting summer festival, the “Hokkai Heso Matsuri,” or “Bellybutton Festival.”
The festival falls on July 28th and 29th every year, and around 4,000 dancers and 70,000 tourists visit over those two days.
Furano City is located in the middle of Hokkaido and has been called “Hokkaido’s Navel,” which is said to be the origin of this festival. It can be incredibly fun to see many people dancing around with faces drawn on their stomachs!
Anyone can participate!
Even just watching the festival is fun, but as many as 100 bystanders can be allowed to jump in and participate per day! The participation fee is 2,000 yen, which includes a “heso odori” (“bellybutton dance”) set that you can take home with you. Enjoy dancing and laughing together with everyone!
