Mt. Takao Chair lift
Glide across the skies and take in the breeze of Mt. Takao.
The Mt. Takao Sightseeing Lift is a two-seater tourist lift that connects the foothill station (elevation 201m) and the mountaintop station (elevation 462m) near the Keio Mt. Takao Station (elevation 191m). It spans approximately 872m and takes about 12 minutes one way. It runs parallel to the Natural Science Research Route No. 1, making it a convenient option for one-way trips.
This sightseeing lift first launched as a single-seater lift in October 1964, the same year as the Tokyo Olympics. In September 1971, it was converted to the current two-seater lift with conveyor-type boarding and exiting, becoming one of the highlights of Mt. Takao.
There’s even a cable car that runs along a similar route as the lift, with the same fare. On clear days you may want to opt for the lift for a fun change of pace and chance to catch the breeze. Feast your eyes on North Yamadaisugi Cryptomeria trees below as you make your way up to the jaw-dropping landscapes ahead. Along the way there’s also camellias, Japanese rowan, and mountain cherry blossoms, depending on the season. In autumn, you can enjoy a comfortable aerial stroll while taking in the panoramic view of the autumn foliage.
